What is Hypnotherapy and how does it work?

Firstly let us start with what Hypnotherapy is NOT. People tend to get mixed up with the world of ‘showbiz’ hypnosis. Clinical Hypnotherapy, the type we practice here at Calm Minds in Stockport is not some kind of stage show gimmick. The process is very simple and you are always completely aware of what is going on.

How hypnosis during therapy works is that you are guided into a natural trance state (this state happens to us in our everyday lives – when you lose those five miles on the motorway, or are engrossed in a film, anything apart from sleep when you have no concept of time and you are on auto-pilot). Once you are in this state the therapist then makes suggestions to your subconcious mind that will help to deal with the issues you are addressing, or you may allow your own subconscious make the changes that are needed and the therapist just encourages that to happen. Metaphors are a very useful way of making sense of your subconscious world. You remain aware of everything and could walk out at any time.

Hypnosis is described by many as an ‘altered state of conciousness’ that is achieved when your mind and body are totally relaxed – this state of deep relaxation is completely natural and totally safe. It’s worth repeating, while you are in hypnosis you will remain aware and in control of your actions at all times.

We can’t emphasize enough that in our everyday lives there are many times when we enter a state of deep relaxation, for example, day dreaming or that feeling of being completely immersed in a good book. You also pass through this deeply relaxed state just before you fall asleep and as you wake up – so there is everything to gain by being able to make use of hypnosis in a therapeutic environment.

This form of therapy has been used since ancient times to provide a safe and drug free method of creating desired changes quickly. It is completely natural and there are no unpleasant or unwanted side effects. A hypnotic state allows your unconcious mind to absorb new, acceptable and beneficial suggestions. It allows you to change into the person you were meant to be.
